Impossible man , I thought but couldn't deny how good it felt to be literally swept off my feet by him.
I tried to take in my surroundings as Garwayn marchedâas if I weighed nothingâtoward a huge, swerving, two-sided stairway. For no apparent reason, he went to the right and agilely moved up the polished stairs, taking two at a time while I clung to his neck.
The massive entrance hall was a good three stories high, with a balcony on the first floor, where the meeting staircases led to double doors flanked by dragoons. Through the doors, we entered another large room with two thrones on top of a smaller set of stairs. The room was also filled with people, who had turned from the large, oval windows to us, and I realized they were part of the spectators who had looked down at us.
Garwayn took another right to an opening that turned into a large hallway. Many doors lay on both sides, each flanked by gaslit torches, whose flames flickered hypnotically.
Garwayn walked us down the endless-seeming corridor until we reached another stairway. Not as opulent as the first, but impressive, nevertheless. Again, he sprinted up the stairs two at a time, pushing more spectators out of the way as they stared at us openmouthed.
At the end of the next hall was another set of double doors, flanked by four dragoons, and I instinctively knew we had reached Garwayn's chambers. Heat rose inside me as I realized why he hastened so much and the pulse in my loins intensified.
I could still taste his lips on my mine from earlier and hoped more of those kisses would follow, because I liked them very much.
The dragoons opened the doors to the most luxurious chambers I had ever seen.
Thick white carpets covered white polished-rock flooring, and straight ahead of us I saw a balcony with four open doors. Light-blue, satin-like curtains fluttered in a slight breeze.
A massive fireplace, big enough to easily swallow a full tree, took over most of the wall to my left, and was flanked by two doors. In front of it stood an arrangement of light-blue couches with white pillows.
Another equally comfortable-looking seating arrangement stood to my left and more doors there led to places unknown for now.
Movement on the balcony caught my attention, and Garwayn carried me straight toward it before he finally allowed me to stand on my feet again.
Behind us, I heard a commotion and my four ladies, Felgroth, as well as several court members, entered Garwayn's living quarters.
"Grand Priest Lynor, may I introduce Princess Brynn?"
"It's a pleasure, Princess," the tall, very skinny man took my hand to kiss it.
Unsure of the etiquette around a Leander priest, I smiled and nodded, but was sidetracked by a narrow, tall table, with a cup, a loaf of bread, and a wicked-looking knife on top of it. I swallowed. Meghan told me that the Leanders cut each other's hands and shook them to cement their union.
I wasn't a stranger to pain, but like every normal person, I tried to avoid it where I could.
